Happy Aquarium increases free pearls for leveling up

Happy Aquarium rewards level up with more pearls
It used to be that you get one Pearl for each level you gained in Happy Aquarium, but that changed yesterday. To get a sense of how high the game has jacked the rewards -- I got 45 Pearls for leveling up to 35! And Brandy from Frisky Mongoose got 16 Pearls for reaching Level 23. Lower level players reported no changes. So far, the response from fans have been positive, so Crowdstar is asking fans to vote up their game on its official Facebook fanpage.

Keep in mind, Pearls are a premium currency in the game, so they'd normally cost real world money to acquire.

New FarmVille Add a Neighbor Pop Up

FarmVille wants to be sure you've added all your neighbors!

FarmVille Add a Neighbor Pop Up

Tonight a new message started popping up on FarmVille asking farmers to add Facebook friends who play FarmVille that are not currently their neighbor. This is certainly a useful tool for those who have not checked their neighbor tab in a while!

Neighbors are essential to FarmVille for various reasons including Free gifts, Barn Raising, Fertilizing Crops among many many other bonuses such as Mystery Eggs and Foals.

How many FarmVille neighbors do you have?

Free Fuel for FarmVille Email Users!

Some FarmVille farmers received a popup tonight asking them to sign up for two weeks of free fuel! Some farmers who enabled the email feature should be receiving daily free fuel emails for two weeks.

"FarmVille wants to thank our users for signing up for email! For a limited time only, we will be giving out fuel that you can only claim through email.

You will receive 1 email a day for the next two weeks containing free fuel. Make sure you claim your offer quickly because each fuel bonus expires within a day. (24 hours)

To participate in this feature, you must be level 12 or above.

The best part of this special promotion? You can get up to 3 tanks of fuel each time!

Please note: This feature is currently only available to a certain group of randomly selected users. It will be available to all users in the near future."

Country Story embraces Roman architecture with My Empire items

It's rather common in Facebook games to see a developer releasing items in one game that take on the theme of another game of theirs. Tonight, Playfish has done this very thing by releasing a small set of My Empire themed items in Country Story. Roman items on a farm? Not too far fetched actually - Roman architecture is used to influence many different styles of buildings. And who would turn down beautiful Roman columns? Certainly not us. Here is the list of the new limited time My Empire decorations.

Cupid Statue - 20,000 coins
Lion King - 60,000 coins
Roman Archway - 5,000 coins
Roman Fence 1 through 6 - 5,000 coins each

The most interesting piece here is certainly the Lion King, which is a previous little lion with a shield riding a cute horse. We're not sure exactly how it will fit in our farm atmosphere, but hey - it's cute. At this point in time we're not sure if more My Empire themed items are coming or how long these limited time decorations will last. Hop on over to Country Story and check them out.

FishVille: Limited time Warhorse and Candystripe Hogfish

FishVille is absolutely one of the best games at constantly keeping limited time items refreshed in the Store, and always having something new and exciting to buy with Sand Dollars. The two latest limited time specialty items are the Atlantean Warhorse and the Candystripe Hogfish.

The Atlantean Warhorse is part of the huge Atlantis theme and is a red-colored variation of the previous Atlantean Seahorse. This unique looking seahorse doesn't come cheap though - it will cost you a hefty 18 Sand Dollars. Luckily, FishVille just made a major change that prevents any premium Sand Dollars fish from dying. At 18 Sand Dollars, this boy better be awfully gorgeous! He is available for the next 4.5 days.

The Candystripe Hogfish is indeed a real type of fish, generally found in the Pacific Ocean (and in saltwater reef aquariums around the world). This limited edition fish costs 12 Sand Dollars and will be available for just about a week.

What is your favorite premium fish in FishVille?

There are two remaining types of Bison still in existence, the North American Bison and the European Bison. The European Bison usually has more fir or woolly characteristics and is the Bison depicted as part of the FarmVille Swiss Alps theme.

Facebook says 'so long' to the virtual gift shop starting August 1

For those of you who would spend your hard-earned cash to buy virtual birthday cakes, flowers and teddy bears on Facebook's virtual gift shop -- this news might come as a surprise. Last night, Facebook announced that it will be closing its virtual gift shop permanently starting August 1, so the staff can "focus on improving other products ... such as Photos, News Feed, Inbox, games, comments, the 'Like' button and the Wall."

The gifts that have already been sent or received will still be visible on your Facebook Wall and items will still be on display on your gifts page. Third-party gifting applications will still allow you to send a virtual wish, such as RockYou's popular Birthday Cards App, the Hallmark Social Calendar and -- my personal favorite -- the irreverent someecards.

Love 'em or hate 'em, the virtual gifts on Facebook can be credited with the success of Facebook Credits, which is quickly becoming the de facto currency for social games, and it also showed that Facebook users were willing to part with few real-life dollars to purchase virtual goods, making it possible for freemium games, e.g. FarmVille, to exist and reach critical mass.

The Facebook gift store closing, on the other hand, serves as a reminder that while you -- the consumer -- open your wallets to buy virtual goods on Facebook, in social games, that this investment won't necessarily stick around for the long term. That's something I'll certainly think about the next time I'm tempted to use my credit card to buy a 'limited edition' whatever in the dozen or so social games on my daily radar.

FarmVille Swiss Alps Decorations: Ornate Carriage, Ornate Fountain, Swiss Gate, Swiss Wall & Orange Basket

FarmVille released additional limited edition Swiss Alps decorations including an Ornate Carriage, Ornate Fountain, Swiss Gate, Swiss Wall and Orange Basket.

All of these items can be purchased in the FarmVille Market during the next 19 days only.

FarmVille Swiss Alps Decorations (Released on July 8th 2010):

    Ornate Carriage – 22 FV$
    Ornate Fountain – 22 FV$
    Swiss Gate – 10,000 coins
    Swiss Wall- 10,000 coins
    Orange Basket – 5,000 coins

FarmVille Good Deeds list reminds you to be a good neighbor

On the surface, FarmVille is a game that's about planting and harvesting crops, but on a deeper level, the real driving force is social obligation. You know, that little voice inside that reminds you to send thank you notes, attend your boss' annual barbecue and to go see friends' bands, even though it's clear they'll never play anywhere but the corner dive bar.

FarmVille is slowly rolling out it's own 'little voice' in the form of Good Deeds list that shows all of the tasks your neighbors need help with in addition to a count of all of the help you give (or don't give) your FarmVille neighbors. It's not clear if you earn a bonus after helping a certain number of friends, but that would certainly inspire more do-gooder behavior. At the very least, this list will remind you that you should give and not just receive.

Social Gaming News Digest for the week ending Aug. 13, 2010

Things happen so fast in the social gaming space these days, it can be hard to keep up. For those who need a little help, here's a quick recap of some of the biggest social gaming news that happened this week:

Google supposedly spent $75 million on virtual currency platform Social Gold, further feeding rumors of the company's social gaming plans. Analyst Colin Sebastian has some interesting ideas about what such plans would mean for the rest of Google.
Disney Boss (and new Playdom owner) Bob Iger got positively giddy at social gaming's prospects on a conference call.
Farmville disappeared from MSN Games, likely due to poor traction from users there.
We didn't get Madden on Facebook, but we did get an announcement for Gasworks' Title Town Football, targeted for next month.
eMarketer reported that social games advertising will be a $220 million market this year. Still only 20% of social gaming revenues, though.
The biggest social network in the world's biggest country announced it had gotten bigger, thanks in part to games.
Golden Nugget became the first real-world casino with a Facebook game.
Square Enix continued its Japanese social gaming push with a freemium RPG.
OMGPOP signed on to integrate their games into myYearbook's social network.
Playdom explains why they're trying to get a foothold in the European market while the getting is good.
Rixty offered bonus Facebook Credits for your loose change.
Zynga offered Petville and Treasure Island cash at 7-Eleven.
HeyZap offered HTML5 support in addition to Flash.

Mafia Wars Beat the Feds event: Ten days and counting to beat these four bosses

Update (9:50 p.m.) : Looks like Beat the Feds challenge is back in action, though many players are reporting that the experience is still proving to be buggy. How is it working for you?

Update: (5:30 p.m.) A Mafia Wars community manager says the release was 'slowed down' as they resolve the problem. More here.

Update (5 p.m. ): Annnd.. It's gone. Beat the Feds has disappeared with no explanation.

Update (4:30 p.m.): It's here! More info at the end of this article.

Update (4:15 p.m.): Watched the clock countdown to zero and still don't see the challenge. Anyone else?

Update (2:30 p.m.): Beat the Feds countdown has now been added to the game (see below)-- looks like this new challenge will officially kick off at 4 p.m. EST.

mafia wars feds are watching

Many mafiosos may remember that a Beat the Feds job made a brief appearance before, but was yanked before many could complete the job. Looks like everyone's getting a second chance to test their mafia's mettle with a new Mafia Wars Beat the Feds event that kicks off Friday, August 13.

Over the next 10 days, you and your pals will be tasked with beating down these four feds. These guys are going to be tough so be sure to stock up on shivs, stun guns and health kits before you head into battle. (Is it just me or does the fed on the lower right look more like an angry bum than a government employee? I digress.) Of course, you will be rewarded for your efforts, see more after the jump.

In this challenge, you will need need to defeat these four feds: Agent Karlin, Agent Miller, D.E.A. Iverson and D.A. Embry. These throwdowns will work similar to other Vegas bosses -- after you beat each boss, you will get an item that will be leveled up the more times you defeat them, which will earn you mastery levels.

The first time you beat them, you'll earn bronze mastery and then you'll work your way up to silver and gold mastery levels. You will also be able to try for a special Mastery item called the Rain Maker, which will give you a 5% increase in cash from Vegas Fights for beating all four bosses at a gold level.

mafia wars beat the feds

To start the Beat the Feds Challenge, go the front page of Mafia Wars, and it's impossible to miss the giant 'Beat the Feds' module on the homepage. Your first mission will be to take out Agent Karlin.

Click start to begin and you'll be taken to a pop-up page, where you'll can post a request on your Wall for help. Karlin has 900 health, so you're most likely going to need all of the assists you can get to knock him down. In addition to being tough to beat, you have a certain time limit that you need to defeat the boss in, or else you have to start over from scratch.

If you have images from the other boss battles, please email them to me at libe@games.com, and I will include them here.

In the meantime, check out all of the stats for each boss and the rewards you get for beating them, courtesy of Mafia Wars Wiki, so you'll know what to expect. It's bad enough that these bosses have tons of health, but that you also have to take them down within a certain amount of time.

Here are a few other tips to consider before taking on this challenge, courtesy of the Mafia Wars Facebook fan page:

You'll have to work quickly to beat the clock, so you can spread the word to your mafia to give you a hand. Helpers will be able to fight a boss as if they are facing the boss themselves. Here's where it pays to be strong - the toughest helpers who do the most damage per boss fight will receive additional rewards like experience, Vegas cash, fight tokens, and LE items for their help.

If you want to pack a solid punch, you can prepare for battle by making sure you have plenty of consumables like health kits, shivs, and stun guns to help you along the way. There's also safety in numbers - go recruit some new members to your mafia before the battle begins to better your odds of victory.

Zynga Seattle could bring Zynga closer with Microsoft and Nintendo

Zynga
Zynga recently posted some job openings on their website referring to an office in Seattle that is yet to exist, meaning that they're planning to expand their reach into the Northwest world of gaming, which the company confirmed. According to the FarmVille creator's website, the company is putting together, "a world-class team of web engineers in Seattle! We are hiring at all levels from associate engineers to architects."

Aside from creating yet another ragtag team of code junkies (which Zynga seems to be on a roll with), what else could Zynga be up to and, more importantly, why Seattle? Well, two of the most popular video game publishers in the world both have stationed their American headquarters in Redmond, Wash.: Nintendo and Microsoft. And considering Zynga is expected to make nearly as much money in its 2-year-old infancy as Nintendo did just four years ago, they probably would like to have a few talks.

If some type of alliance were to take place, the preemptively-named Zynga Seattle could help Nintendo's online presence immensely. And it's not as if is Zynga is above this strategy. As for Microsoft, they seem to already have a relationship with the company on some level. Not to mention it's been rumored that the center of Silicon Valley could take a bite of the social games market in 2011. Zynga is worth entirely too much to consider buying on the whole, but what about subsidizing one studio? It's all that Microsoft would need to help launch some social game marketing for its Halo franchise.

Think about it. With the way things are going, these guys are going to need someone experienced if social game branding is to take off and become profitable. Who better qualified than the company who developed the face of the industry?

Nintendo claims 'no connection between social games and DS games,' someone sounds scared

Number of Nintendo DS games bought by DS players and those that play both DS and social games
In a recent attempt to calm the nerves of investors, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata provided detailed infographics defending his claim that there is no connection between the sales of Nintendo DS games and the proliferation of social games. The infographics seem to prove that social gaming has not affected Nintendo DS game sales negatively, going so far as to prove that those who play social games like Zynga's FarmVille actually buy more Nintendo DS games by a small percentage.

However, the data used to compile this information was gathered only in Tokyo and Osaka. So, what about the American market where it's been discovered that two in every five gamers is a social gamer? While Japan is also witness to a burgeoning social games market, it's nothing compared to that of the U.S. where Zynga, its flagship company, is expected to be worth more than $5 billion.

It can't be said for sure why Nintendo of America didn't conduct a similar study, but we can imagine they've already seen some of the numbers. Though is this really a cause for concern for Nintendo and its investors? Only if the head of the Mushroom Kingdom resists. Why fight it (or be scared, for that matter) when you're in prime position to create impressive cash cows Facebook games with Nintendo character branding? Zynga's move into Seattle could be a blessing in disguise for Nintendo.

Round two of FarmVille Limited Edition Country Fair Decorations

FarmVille Country Fair Decorations
Tonight's FarmVille update released the next six decorations in their new Country Fair collection. These items are all limited edition, for only 12 days. The items include a Strength Test game for 100,000 coins, a Fair Sign for 20,000 coins, a Popcorn Stand for 2,500 coins, a Swing Ride for 36 Farm Cash, and a Farm Float for 17 Farm Cash.

These were added to all of the previous Country Fair items that were released. So far, this theme seems to be mostly leaning towards coin spenders, as most of the items have been for coins instead of Farm Cash. These new items are sure to transform your farm into a fun-filled event that the whole family can enjoy. Log in and check out these items today - they're indicated in the the FarmVille Market with a bumper car symbol shown above.

FarmVille Limited Edition Country Fair Buildings

Along with the new decorations tonight, FarmVille also has released a set of new buildings for your Country Fair enjoyment. These two new items are available for the next 12 days along with all of the other Country Fair items.

The first is a Ferris Wheel, which we don't exactly consider a 'building', but who are we to argue with Zynga? This Ferris Wheel is sure to provide endless fun, but at the price of 42 Farm Cash, it's not going to come cheap. This building also gives out 1000 XP and sells for 5,000 coins in case you change your mind after buying it. Of course, you could also send it as a gift to a friend if you so desire.

Secondly, the Corn Stand is another new Country Fair building in the market. If you have ever been to a local fair, you know that one of the best ways to pass the time is ordering countless ears of buttery yellow corn. This Corn Stand will cost you 300,000 coins, sell for 15,000 coins, and give out 3000 XP.

FarmVille Country Fair Animals: Emu and Rex Rabbit

What good is a Country Fair without a petting zoo of adorable farm animals to play with and cuddle with? FarmVille knows this, and tonight update sees the release of two new animals into the Market.

The Emu is a giant bird related to the ostrich that is native to Australia. The Emu in FarmVille will cost you 20 Farm Cash, sell for 90 coins, and has a 2 day harvest time.

Another new animal is the Rex Rabbit, which is a breed of rabbit from France. This adorable lop-eared friend is cheaper, at only 12 Farm Cash. This little fella sells for 100 coins and is harvestable ever two days.

These animals are only available for 12 days, so hop to it! Buy them before you miss your chance. Check them out in the Animals section of the FarmVille Market.

ESPNU College Town releases Soccer, new All Stars, fresh tunes and more

Thanks to Playdom's most recent update to ESPNU College Town, we can play the other football. That's right, Soccer has arrived as the fourth venue sport in the game, which means a slew of new events and All Star Athletes too. The venue requires players to have at least one thousand students (assuming this is their fourth venue) and features events like a Dance Marathon, Student Camp Out and the long awaited Graduation Ceremony--hopefully that doesn't reduce your student population.

In addition to Soccer, Softball Practice has been added to the list of events in the Baseball Field venue. Not to mention that brand new tunes have been added to the game that give it a "Pomp and Circumstance" vibe. The Newspaper has also been changed to include a new Featured Items section that includes Campus Affiliation items (wait, don't we already have a spot for those?). Playdom also updated the Scoreboard so that more statistics are displayed while Player Challenges were changed so that players who challenge schools four or more levels below them will not gain experience. Take that, bullies.

The update also fixed a list of issues to improve the game experience such as loading issues, displaying friends correctly in the Gifting section and--most importantly--a change to how the game calculates School Spirit, which a Playdom community manager explained as, "[players] weren't able to add students despite it displaying that you had enough Spirit. This issue has been fixed with this update." Check out the forum post for the whole list of changes and see for yourself in-game.

Mafia Wars: Infiltrate the Pentagon for exclusive Mastery items and Government Secrets

Infiltrate the Pentagon
The time has come to do the impossible, mobsters. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to play dress up and sneak into the Pentagon. (Wait, what?) Apparently in Mafia Wars, it's just that easy. In a brand new, week-long gifting event titled "Infiltrate the Pentagon," players will have to send each other military uniforms for limited edition Mastery weapons, animals and vehicles.

Quite honestly, this is exactly like the recent Prized Pigs and Masked Robbery gifting events, but on a much larger scale. As of this writing, only the Army Uniform is available with the Navy Uniform to release in three days and the Air Force Uniform to be available in a week from today. All you need to do is receive enough of each uniform to achieve Bronze Mastery and score the associated item. Master each uniform further by sending and receiving more uniforms to increase the statistics on each exclusive item. For example, the Ranger Kukri starts at a measly 58 Attack and 40 Defense, but boosting it to Gold Mastery through stockpiling enough Army Uniforms will increase its stats to an impressive 75 Attack and 39 Defense (that might be a glitch).

But we know what you're all after. Achieving Gold Mastery with each Uniform will unlock the Grand Prize, Government Secrets. An item with 103 Attack and 132 Defense, these should come in handy should you ever need to do a bit of blackmailing--which can be the ultimate defense. So, get to gifting those uniforms and get into the Pentagon before this window of opportunity closes. (Doesn't the Pentagon at least, say, scan fingerprints?)

Social City: Save the Windows Phone promo link for 2 free City Bucks daily

If you remember the Windows Phone 7 promotion in Social City, you'll recall that players are suppose to get a free City Buck for every time they viewed a Windows Phone commercial, and are allowed up to "2 video views per day." This ensured 2 free daily City Bucks, but the video was only advertised on Page C (the Financial News section) of the Social City in-game newsletter. And then, shortly after, the advertisement disappeared, and with it, we assumed the freebie deal was gone too.

But that freebie offer is back today! And following the return of the offer is a hot tip from a game-savvy and generous player, Nunofrc, who left a comment saying that all you need to get the free daily City Bucks offer, is to save and run the link to the videos -- here's that link.

Click on the link when you're already playing Social City. Doing so will launch a Windows Phone commercial in the form of a YouTube video. After the video has played all the way through, you'll get a message from the game that your free City Buck has arrived. Repeat this, and you've got 2 free City Bucks!

Zynga: FarmVille Unicorns will soon offer Unicorn foals

One of the most hotly anticipated items in FarmVille over the last few weeks was the Unicorn. Luckily, we were finally given the Unicorn as part of the Mystery Game last week, but even then, users weren't fully satisfied. What was missing from the equation? The simple ability for Unicorns to produce foals.

Luckily for all of you, our inside source at Zynga has confirmed to us that in the future, Unicorns will be able to breed foals. Now, don't get too excited just yet, as this feature might take a few weeks to come to the game. Why, you ask? According to our source, it has to do with the fact that December will simply have so much stuff going on in FarmVille, that they won't be able to fit it into the normal development schedule. Rest assured though, it will happen in the future.

If you missed out on the White Unicorn that was inside last week's Mystery Game, feel free to try this week's version, as it contains a chance to win a Candy Cane Unicorn from the Winter Holiday theme.

New FarmVille Winter Animal: Gypsy Horse

There had been talk for some time about the release of a Gypsy Horse in FarmVille, but after seeing leaked images of the horse, we weren't sure when exactly (if ever) the animal would actually be coming to the game.

In a rare non-Tuesday/Thursday update, however, Zynga has officially launched the Gypsy Horse in the game, as part of the current Winter Holiday limited edition item theme. For those that are simply amused by the name, know that the Gypsy Horse is an actual variety of horse - meaning that real-world horse lovers will probably be more than willing to purchase one of these beautiful animals for the game's asking price of 26 Farm Cash.

What's more, we have it on good authority that the Gypsy Horse will be able to produce a Gypsy Foal, if placed inside the Horse Stable and given the chance to breed.

The Gypsy Horse will be available for the next 26 days.

New FarmVille Mystery Game for the week of November 28

In a rare move, Zynga has updated the FarmVille Mystery Game before the regular Tuesday night time limit. Fear not, however, if you didn't have a chance to pick up one of the White Unicorns available in the previous Mystery Game, as this week offers something that you might like even better.

The contents of this week's Mystery Game are all about the new Winter Holiday season, and contain some items that we talked to you about as sneak peeks. The contents of the Mystery Game have been confirmed as the following:

Candy Unicorn
Winter Reindeer
Winter Ferris Wheel
Winter Sleigh
Winter Fountain
Arctic Hare

All of these items seem to be exclusive to the Mystery Game, which costs a whopping 24 Farm Cash to play this week, up from the 16 Farm Cash price you might have been expecting. Still, with the chance at another Unicorn, and the news that Unicorns will soon be breedable, it might be worth the expense. You'll have the next 6 days to decide that for yourself, before this round expires from the store.

FarmVille Winter Holiday Buildings: Holiday PO & Winter Station

FarmVille's latest game update brought with it a new series of Winter Holiday items, now available in the game's store. In this release, we see the addition of two new buildings, both of which we brought you a Sneak Peek of just yesterday.

The buildings are the Holiday PO (Post Office) and the Winter Station. The Holiday PO is available for coins, but is quite expensive, at a price of 250,000 coins. For that splurge, you'll earn 2500 experience points as a reward. Meanwhile, the Winter Station is a nice train station building that will go lovely either with your already placed train tracks (that were released in the game a few weeks ago), or with an entire new, winter-themed train track that you can now construct via individual items purchased from the store. The Winter Station costs 20 Farm Cash to add to your farm.

Both of these items will be available in the game for the next 26 days, giving you plenty of time to get your farm completely into the Holiday spirit.
